    This note describes the design and manufacture by Allied Motion of a large bore hollow shaft motor with an integral 18 bit absolute encoder . This motor is to be used on the "Centrifuge Accomodation Module" of the International Space Station for microgravity reseach with a required effective life of 15 years. The overriding reason for the selection of Allied Motion for this project was the combination of motor, encoder and integration design skills as well as manufacturing facilities.

    The following is a description of a microprocessor-based position control system for the CM-320 motor/encoder. The position control loop resolves 1 part in 262,144 (2 18), using the 1024 c/r sine wave output of the encoder. The described techniques are useful in any type application where fast and accurate positioning of an object is desired.

    This note describes the solution provided by Allied Motion for a rapid means of focusing a multiple laser beam used in an imaging application. The problem presented was the varying distance of the media to the focus plane which caused "fuzzy" images and which also put severe constraints on the allowable runout of the media carrier, increasing the cost and complexity of the substantial mechanical platform.
